Windhoek is the capital of Namibia. The population is about 145 thousand inhabitants. The other large cities in the country practically are absent. Windhoek is located in the central part of the country and is protected from different directions from dry Southern-African winds by hills. Within the XIXth century Windhoek was under the authority of leader Nama. At the end of the century Germany has presented its rights on the settlement, and since 1892 the city was the capital of the German possessions in the South-West Africa. In 1915, during the first world war Windhoek has been seized by Southern-African armies, and after war the Austral Africa has received the mandate of the League of the Nations for the control over the country. At the end of 80th years of the XXth century the Austral Africa has agreed to grant country with an opportunity to conduct free elections, and after the elections of 1989 conducted under the control of UN observers, the South-West Africa has become Namibia, and Windhoek - its capital. Trade and administrative centre of the country, Windhoek is connected by railways with Walvis Bay - the main Atlantic port of Namibia – and the Southern Africa. Despite of an arid climate, the main occupation of the inhabitants of the region is cultivation of large and small-sized cattle. In the capital wide trade in astrakhan and also processing of an animal production of the region is led. Here are alimentary, sewing, machine-building enterprises. There is an international airport.
