PORT – LOUIS, MAURITIUS
Port-Louis is the capital of the Republic of Mauritius and administrative centre of the district Port Louis. It is the main port of the country on the Indian Ocean, and also its largest city, the main administrative and commercial centre. The population of Port-Louis is about 158 thousand inhabitants. The city has been based by the Frenchmen approximately in 1735 and has turned into the big, deep port into which the ships gone from Europe to Asia came. However after discovering of Suez Canal in 1869 Port-Louis has lost its strategic value. In 1968 Port-Louis has become capital of an independent state of the Republic of Mauritius.
Oil refining, chemical, alimentary, and wood-manufacturing and polygraph industries are developed.
In the central part of the city which has saved the shape from times of the French colonization, the building of government constructed in 1738 in the style of a baroque, the French theatre, the Roman cathedral, some old private residences attract attention. The mosques adjoin with the Hinduist temples and Buddhist pagodas. Here the Institute of Mauritius with public library, the historical museum and the art gallery are situated.
