    Nouakchott, the capital and the largest city of Mauritania, was constructed only 40 years ago. In 1957 - three years prior to acquiring of complete independence by Mauritania - the decision to build capital on this place was taken. Today Nouakchott is the administrative and economic center of the country. The population is about 550 thousand inhabitants. Near the city there are a seaport and an airport.
    In the capital alimentary and wood-manufacturing industries are developed.
    Here there are the National school of administration, the National institute of studying of Muslim faith, the National library and archive.
