NAIROBI, KENYA
Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, is located at height of 1700 m on a tableland in an austral part of the country. With adherent
Territory the city forms metropolitan district of Nairobi. The population of the capital is about 2,1 million inhabitants.
The city has grown on the place of English fort constructed in 1899. The name has appeared on behalf of small boggy river and means in tongue of маsais “cold water”. Nairobi has fast become the first administrative centre of English colony Kenya, and later of all the East Africa. Inflow of Europeans since 1960th years has provoked boom of construction of smart hotels, skyscrapers, business centers.
As soon as colonizers collected more and more and more fertile lands of Kenya for themselves, among the local population kikuyu the discontent grew which in 1952 led to the revolt known as revolt Mau-Mau. Jomo Kenyata was the leader of the revolt, asserting the agrarian reform in the country. Later he has become first president of the Republic of Kenya. In December, 1963 Nairobi has been proclaimed by capital of a new independent state.
Today Nairobi is one of the largest cities of Africa with wide circulars, modern skyscrapers and the brisk international airport. In a western part of the city luxury areas of Europeans and employees of the establishments of the United Nations are located. Here the National University of Kenya is located.
In the capital alimentary, textile, leather-shoe, chemical, metal-cutting industries are advanced.
Tourism acquires the increasing weight in the economy of the city. Nairobi is a popular starting-point for various safaris. In 25 kilometers to the south from city there is the National Nature Reserve of Nairobi based in 1948.
