FREETOWN, SIERRA - LEONE

 

   
    Freetown (is also known under the name Saint-George) is the capital of the state Sierra Leone and a port on the Atlantic Ocean. The city is located at foot of a mountain ridge on the coast of one of the most picturesque connatural harbors on the western coast of Africa. The population of the capital is about 669000 inhabitants.
    Alimentary, light, oil refining, cement and other industries are advanced. There are factories on processing diamonds and effecting of tobacco items, a shipyard here. From here the palm oil, cocoa, coffee and a ginger is exported. In the north from Freetown, in Loungui there is an international airport.
    The downtown is built up two and three-tier houses in style of English cities of the XIXth century. Here the National museum of the country, a botanic garden and an Anglican cathedral, university college the Waggon-Bay based in 1827,which in 1967 has become a part of university of Sierra Leone, over. George is located. The perfect beaches located near the city are popular among the tourists.
    Freetown is one of the oldest cities of the Western Africa. It has been based by English abolitionists in 1787 as a settlement for free slaves. From here the name of city (in translation from English Freetown - «Free city ") comes. In 1808-1961 Freetown was an administrative centre of the English colony, and after 1961 –of an independent state of Sierra Leone.
