Conakry is the capital of the Republic of Guinea and the main port of the country on the Atlantic Ocean. The city is located on the island Tombo and the peninsula Kalum (coherent among themselves by a levee). The population is about 1508000 inhabitants (with suburbs). The city has been based in 1884. From the end of the XIXth century Conakry was the 1st administrative centre of the colony of the French Guinea, and in 1958 has become capital of an independent state of the Republic of Guinea. The city is the main transport unit of country, its administrative and commercial centre. The economic growth of the capital was scheduled in 1940th years. Today the city exports bananas, aluminum, coffee, common oranges, fish and palm oil. Polygraphic industries, effecting of metal and plastic items, alimentary, chemical, textile, and wood-manufacturing are developed. Near the city there are shafts on production of bauxites and iron ore. There is an international airport. In Conakry there is the polytechnic institute, the National museum and National library.
