BRAZZAVILLE, CONGO
Brazzaville is the largest city and the capital of Congo. Also it is known under the names Маya-Maya and N'Тамо. The city is located on the river Congo, opposite to city of Kinshasa (the Democratic Republic of Congo). Brazzaville is administratively separated in the autonomous region. The population of the capital is from above 1 million persons.
The city has been based as the French military post in 1880 by the pioneer P.S.de Brazza. In 1903-1950 the city was an administrative centre of Average Congo, in 1950-1958 -of the French Equatorial Africa, and in 1958-1960 – of autonomous Republic of Congo. During the Second World War Brazzaville was one of the basic bases of the movement «Free France» (since 1942 «the Battling France "). In 1960 the country has received independence and Brazzaville has become the capital of the Republic of Congo.
In spite of the fact that Brazzaville is the main river port of the country, large seaport Pwent-Noir is considered to be an economic capital. In 1934 both capitals have been connected by the railway that has sped up their economic body height. Because of the thresholds and falls lower on a watercourse of the river Congo Brazzaville is a final stop of the big waterway of Congo - Ubangui. From here by the railway the goods are delivered to Pwent-Noir. In the city the textile, alimentary, chemical enterprises are located, handicraft woodcarving, effecting of art ceramics are advanced. There is an international airport.
In Brazzaville there is the University Marien-Ngwabi and the National museum.
The original culture of peoples of Congo for the last decades was enriched with new directions: for example, in painting the style poto-poto has acquired popularity style (under the name of an old African quarter of Brazzaville) - the pictures representing stages of national life, are executed by bright paints, figures of people are extended, stylized and extremely dynamical.
