BISSAU, GUINEA - BISSAU
Bissau – the capital of Guinea - Bissau and an administrative centre of the independent sector of Bissau - is located on the Atlantic shore in a mouth of the river Geba in the Western part of the country. The population of the city is about 80000 persons, a large part from which shrives Muslim faith. The basic ethnic groups include peoples fulani, mandinyu and belante.
Bissau has been based in the XVIIth century as the Portuguese center of trade by slaves. In 1869 the city has become a port of free trade. As a result of activity of the African liberation movement which began in 1962, in 1974 Bissau has become the capital of the independent state.
Bissau is the largest port of the country and is specialized on export of walnuts, rice, skins and wax. In the city it is advanced alimentary, wood-manufacturing, furniture and light industries are developed. Ship-repair workshops work. There is an international airport.
In the cultural plan the interest is represented by historical-art museum of the city.
