BANJUL, GAMBIA

    
    A unique and rather large city of Gambia - capital of country Banjul (about 50 thousand persons, with suburbs - 145 thousand persons), is located on a shore in a mouth of the river Gambia running into the Atlantic Ocean.
    Banjul (under the name Bathurst) has been founded in 1816 by Englishmen, as a seaport and a base for suppression of the trade by slaves. Subsequently for some time it was a part of the English colony of Sierra Leone. In 1889 Bathurst has become the capital of English colony and protectorate Gambia. In 1965 country has received independence, and in 1973 its capital has been renamed into Banjul.
    This modern city built in a rectangular manner, is a seaport and the largest city of country. Banjul is the center of education and the finance of Gambia. Here food-processing industry (processing of peanuts, fishes and seafood’s), effecting of filigree dressings and woolen tissues, ship repair are advanced. The industry of tourism educes more and more. There is an international airport.
