The Capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa is located at the height of 2400 m, they name it «city of eternal spring «because of a temperate climate. It is the largest city of the country, its trade, industrial and cultural center, and also an administrative centre of the territory of Addis Ababa. The city is located on a tableland in the central part of country and is linked to the other regions of the country by a net of highways, and with a port of Djibouti by the railway. The international airport is located here too. The population of city is about 2200000 inhabitants. Until midpoints of the XIXth century the capital of the country was the city Gondar (to the North of Lake Tana), about which the palaces of the XVI-XVIIIth centuries in Gondar remind. Addis Ababa has been based in 1887 by the emperor Menelik II at the place of hot sources. He has given to the city its today's name which in translation into Russian means «new flower ". In 1889 the city has become the capital of the country. Today Addis Ababa is a large city with wide circulars and an abundant green planting. In capital modern buildings prevail, often one can meet eucalypt avenues. Due to the big height above sea level the mild, pleasant climate is here. Addis Ababa is well advanced in the industrial sense. It is a city with the prosperous enterprises of metal-cutting, alimentary, wood, cement, leather-shoe, polygraphic industries. In the capital there is a huge open market Merkato on which manufactured goods from a leather, metal and an arbor, and also agricultural production are sold: coffee, tobacco items and latescent products. Here there are a university, musical and art schools, some museums and research institutes, and also headquarter of the Economic Commission of the United Nations for Africa and Organizations of African Unity (ОАU).The palace of Menelik II (1894), a modern building of the House of Africa with A.Tekle's stained-glass windows (1963) and Sacred George Cathedral of the octagonal form (1896) are the main places of interest of the city.
