 BANGUI, THE CENTRAL - AFRICAN REPUBLIC

 

    Bangui - the capital of the Central African Republic - is located on the western riverbank Ubangui - the main trade artery of the country. The city is the main port, and also administrative, economic centre of science of the republic. The population of Bangui compounds 474 thousand inhabitants (1990). The city has arisen around the French military fast constructed in 1889-1890. It was an administrative centre of the French terrain Ubangui-Shari and since 1960 has become the capital of independent Central African Republic. Bangui has suffered  big shocks when at the end of 70th years of the XXth century Jean Bedel Bokassa, named itself Bokassa I, has headed the Central African Empire existed not for long period.
    There is an international airport. The textile, leather-shoe, alimentary (effecting peanut and palm oil), wood industry, metal-working, soap production. It exports cotton, coffee, wood and diamonds.
    Bangui is a very picturesque city similar to huge park. In the National museum magnificent samples of the African art are introduced. In the capital the Bangui University works.
